What is HPLJ?

The Brinkerhoff Certification for High Performance Learning Journeys ®  (HPLJ) is a certification program where you will learn how to design effective training programs that create lasting behavioral change.

Why is a HPLJ approach important?

For complex trainings I find that the HPLJ approach, in a very structured way, enables stretching in different dimensions and securing of as many perspectives as possible. The approach handles the complete chain of training; from analysis, design and development as well as planning, performance and follow-up. A great tool and way of working.

How has HPLJ impacted the way you work? 

From the first session I captured different tools, methods, ideas and formats helping me in my daily work. I specifically appreciate the visualizing of the core elements, the active work with performance barriers, the hands-on ideas (kick-off webinars and short video message to manager/trainees). And also the approach of letting the trainees create their own job aids during the training.

To whom would you recommend it?

I would recommend the HPLJ approach mainly for complex trainings in a larger or global environment – basically when you need to have a long term sustainable result and make a difference.

Why is a HPLJ approach important?

The HPLJ approach encourages, even forces designers of learning to break out of an “event” mindset, and consider crafting “layers of learning” that build true competency and mastery.

How has HPLJ impacted the way you work? 

Creatively designed HPLJs stretch the learning solution far beyond the dimension of time. I now intentionally design my learning solutions across ALL of the critical dimensions including Organizational Space, Relationships, Tools/Structure and Business Linkage, in addition to the dimension of Time. For me, the most impactful of these dimensions has been the stretch of Relationships, which has provided our key stakeholders with a “window” into the learning process.

To whom would you recommend it?

I’d recommend an HPLJ approach to the design of learning solutions when:

  • A high level of performance is critical
  • Performance has a high degree of complexity or difficulty
  • Stakeholders are scrutinizing your results
  • Failure is NOT an option.
